They will bring us up-to-date on major regional issues and the impact they may have on Lee’s Summit.

Invite a Friend    Back to Top
The Quarterly Investor meeting is a great time to familiarize friends and business associates with the LSEDC.  If each of us would invite just one new guest, we could expand our membership and enhance our level of service to the entire Lee’s Summit business community.

Marketer of the Year and Small Cities Award     Back to Top
A lot of hard work is paying off for the LSEDC. Earlier this month, Mayor Messerli joined me at the 44th Annual Governor’s Economic Development Conference in Lake Ozark where we received the 2002 Economic Development Marketer of the Year Award from Governor Bob Holden.

The award reflects several years’ worth of work in promoting business expansion and retention in Lee’s Summit. Several projects and activities contributed significantly to the win:

Over 1,700 new jobs created by the opening of the new Immigration and Naturalization Service office, Caremark, LabOne, SummitWoods and other businesses;

The successful “Greetings from Lee’s Summit” postcard campaign that delivered monthly messages about our city to 600 metro area civic, political, real-estate, development and media professionals;

Founding of the Eastern Jackson County Workforce Training Consortium; and,
The initiation or participation in several studies aimed at improving the quality of life and business climate in Lee’s Summit.
I’d like to thank all the LSEDC investors who supported these, and all of our efforts.

In May, Lee’s Summit was listed among the top 60 smaller cities in America in the 2002 edition of the prestigious Grey House Publishing Directory of America’s Top-Rated Smaller Cities. It is the only city in the Kansas City region to be listed. Ballwin, a St. Louis suburb, is the only other city in Missouri on the list.

The 60 cities are ranked by population growth, median income, unemployment and crime rate.

This is a great recognition of our community’s quality of life for families, workers and businesses. Only the very best communities in America earn a place on this list.

The complete report is available online at www.leessummit.org, or by contacting the LSEDC office at (816) 525-6617.
Roundtable Seeks Broad View of Major Issues    Back to Top

An informal group of community leaders, including the President and Board Chairs of the LSEDC, are gathering on a monthly basis to help coordinate action on important community matters.

In addition to the LSEDC, participants include staff or members of organizations that represent all facets of the community including government, business, schools, neighborhood and community associations, historic downtown and nearby neighborhoods, faith-based organizations and health care.

Our first major initiative will be to help coordinate the various activities related to the downtown area to help assure maximum impact and progress is made toward enhancing and revitalizing both the commercial and nearby residential areas of the city. We particularly want to help advance the passage of the coming referendum that will fund construction of a new city hall downtown.

For more information about the group please contact me at jdevine@leessummit.org or call the office at (816) 525-6617.

Meeting Schedule Changes     Back to Top

Starting this fall, we will be amending the regular monthly Board and Quarterly Investor meeting schedules. The effect will be to reduce the total number of meetings by two, while hopefully increasing the effectiveness and usefulness of the remainder.

In particular, mark you calendar in April 2003 when we will join the Chamber of Commerce on its annual train trip to Jefferson City.  This will be a great time to network, meet business associates and political leaders, and to get your two cents worth in on the important issues facing our state and city.
