Publishers of Area Media:
on Tap for Quarterly Investor Meeting
If you’ve ever wondered what and why something makes news you won’t want to miss the October 2 Quarterly Investor Meeting. Kansas City Star Publisher Art Brisbane and Lee’s Summit Journal Publisher Steve Curd will be our guest speakers. They will discuss the news business from their two unique perspectives and answer your questions about the challenges and responsibilities of covering the news locally, regionally and nationally.

The luncheon will be at Garozzo’s Ristorante at 11:45 - 1:30 pm. Please contact Tereasa Evans  tdevans@leessummit.org  to make reservations.

Welcome to Teresa Evans

Effective September 1, Teresa Evans will be LSEDC’s Manager for Office and Customer Service. Teresa comes to us with an excellent administrative and program management background from the Metropolitan Community College System. Moreover, she is an excellent ambassador and spokesperson for our community: Her daughter attended Lee’s Summit’s award winning schools and she worked part time in Annie Sue’s Antiques in downtown for a while.
Kelly Blomberg has moved on to work part time for the Volunteer Services Division of the Lee’s Summit Hospital and, from time to time, she may be working part time on special projects for LSEDC.  Please say hello to Teresa when you call the office the next time.
Workforce Consortium Featured in Business Journal

The new Eastern Jackson County Workforce Training Consortium was featured in the Kansas City Business Journal recently.

Formation of the consortium was spearheaded here at the LSEDC as a way to improve workforce and management training among Eastern Jackson County companies. Jennifer Yazell serves as the primary training and performance consultant for the group, while Ron Haughton is Chairman of the Board. Andrew Fila of MCC’s Business and Technology College has provided considerable support to the group’s efforts in these formative months.

Eleven area companies employing about 3,000 people currently utilize the consortium’s services.

Governor’s Conference on Workforce Development to Showcase Consortium

On October 11, Ron, Jennifer Andrew and I have been asked to make a presentation on what got the trend setting consortium started and what makes it successful.  Check out the specifics at:

Quarterly Progress Report to Lee’s Summit Mayor and City Council

On Thursday evening October 3, public relations counsel Bill Musgrave, Kansas City Area Development Senior Vice President, Tim Cowden, and I will be making a short presentation on work plan elements: Target Industry Attraction and Community Image Enhancement. If you would like a Power Point copy of the presentation mailed to you, please contact Teresa Evans with your email address.

Commercial Realtors Convene Roundtable

In conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, the LSEDC is staffing a monthly meeting of commercial realtors with listings and concerns in Lee’s Summit. We’ve had three meetings so far. During the roundtable, participating realtors discuss their listings, share leads and discuss the development climate in the community and in Eastern Jackson County.

This lively group of over 20 commercial brokers is a great place to get real time, up to the minute information on the Lee’s Summit development climate. The next meeting is on Thursday, October 3 ay 8:30 am at the Depot. Call Teresa Evans is you would like to attend.

Uptick in Prospect Activity

This summer ended with a rush of prospect activities. There have been several prospect companies ranging from a financial services company to an R&D/manufacturing concern to a pharmaceutical firm looking at Lee’s Summit. We’re in competition with the usual communities: Kansas City, Lenexa, Olathe and the Northland. Build to suit and existing buildings are in the mix for this regional competition. Several are on a fast track.

Travel Plans

Two upcoming events will provide the opportunity to showcase Lee’s Summit.

On September 26 I’ll be attending the Society of Industrial Realtors annual trade show at the downtown Kansas City Marriott. This event attracts the industrial and commercial real estate who’s who including brokers, agents, architects, engineers and developers. Joining me at the show will be my counterparts from Grandview, Blue Springs and Independence. We’ll be sharing all the positive attributes of Eastern Jackson County.

Then in early October I’ll be accompanying Kansas City Area Development Council staff to meet with national site location consultants in Arizona. We’ll be touting the benefits of locating in Greater Kansas City.

Welcome and Thank You!
In addition to the increased investment from the city of Lee's Summit, our private sector fundraising effort is going very well. The campaign will end this month but in the interim, please join me in thanking the 31 new LSEDC investors and 31 existing investors who have increased their level of investment so far. Special thanks to Board Members and Investors who have assisted in bringing in new members or increased investment of existing members: Mayor Karen Messerli, Mike Atcheson, Gary Bromley, Larry Finkmeyer, Larry Glaze, Bud Hertzog, and Dr Tony Stansberry.
