State education leaders have once again recognized two area school districts for continuing efforts in increasing student achievement.
The Blue Springs and Lee's Summit school districts are among 178 districts to earn the Distinction in Performance award. About one-third of all school districts in the state achieved the distinction this year, but Blue Springs and Lee's Summit are two of only 19 schools to earn the honor for the fifth consecutive year. And both did so this year with perfect scores.
"I think this is another great reflection on what our staff is doing in the classroom," Blue Springs Superintendent Paul Kinder said. "I give the whole credit to the staff. We continue each year to find top quality staff members to replace those that have left. It is the staff that has to perform on a daily basis."
The award recognizes districts that have shown outstanding academic performance and progress in the areas measured by the state's accreditation standards. This includes Missouri Assessment Program test results, ACT scores, and attendance and dropout rates.
"I am obviously pleased with this recognition," said Lee's Summit Superintendent Tony Stansberry. "I think it speaks well of the entire staff and school district as well as the participation of our parents. This is pretty much a school community whose efforts are to work with student achievement."
To qualify, districts were required to meet 11 out of 12 standards - scoring at least 91 out of 100 possible points - including all MAP-based measures. The award is based on the same performance criteria used for the Missouri School Improvement Program, the accreditation process districts go through every five years. This award represents a one-year look at a district's overall performance.
According to the 2005 Annual Performance Reports, released for each school district, both Blue Springs and Lee's Summit met 12 out of 12 standards, earning 100 points.
