Resolution in Support of Proposed Local Use Tax on the Ballot June 2, 2020

WHEREAS, the mission of the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council (LSEDC) is to promote and enhance the City of Lee’s Summit as a model community for economic growth; and

WHEREAS, the local use tax would be used to provide essential city services such as infrastructure projects, police, fire, building inspections, and snow removal; and

WHEREAS, the local use tax shall be at the same rate as the local sales tax, which is currently 2.25%; and

WHEREAS, the local use tax shall not be applied to purchases where sales tax is collected; and

WHEREAS, the local use tax would generate approximately $1.8 million in revenue annually; and

WHEREAS, the trend of online sales continues to increase; and

WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic likely caused a significant and sudden interruption to local sales tax revenue;

NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Board of Directors of the Lee’s Summit Economic

Development Council, on this day, May 21, 2020, supports the City of Lee’s Summit seeking voter approval on a local use tax in the June 2nd election.
