With 17,937 students, Lee’s Summit R-7 is one of the largest school districts on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metropolitan area. In addition to the success of its public school district, Lee’s Summit is known for its innovative, community-based approach to education and workforce-readiness programs. The city is home to the Summit Technology Academy at the Missouri Innovation Campus, a progressive collaboration among Metropolitan Community College, the University of Central Missouri, the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District and participating business partners. The MIC grants business partners a seat at the table to determine which skills should be taught, in order to make the program’s career-driven students valuable associates of their business. Students, as part of an accelerated program, work with industry mentors to graduate high school with a high school diploma, associate degree and invaluable hands-on experience.
